Jerry worked with his hands his entire career. As a welder he learned to make objects from many pieces, being able to see the finished product in his mind before it is done. However, with wood turning the wood determines the outcome - the grain provides the inspiration.
Jerry turns 3D - he sees all sides of the piece as it is being formed in conjunction with how his hand movement affects the piece. As the structural integrity is compromised by rotting, a blemish or insect trail he quickly determines how to secure the problem as that is part of the story.
Just like a tree, we all have scars and blemishes, but that is what makes us unique. Preserving the piece is the main objective in every turning. Creating a keepsake for you to treasure is an honor.
